Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming!”
Genesis 37:19 (NKJV)
Joseph was Jacob’s favourite son. To his brothers, though, he was detestable. Apart from snitching on his wayward brothers, Rachael’s son narrated his dreams to his siblings, who were not impressed.
Here is one of his dreams: “There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.” (Genesis 37:7).
I have Dreamed another Dream
His second dream was even stranger to Joseph’s brothers. “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” (Genesis 37:9). Both dreams indicated that he would reign over his parents and siblings.
Jacob rebuked Joseph. His brothers hated him. Their animosity soon developed into murderous thoughts. The opportunity to actualize their disgusts came when Joseph went to Dothan to check on his brothers.
This Dreamer is Coming!
Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!” (Genesis 37:19-20).
By God’s grace, though, Joseph did not die; neither did his dreams. What followed was severe testing of Joseph’s faith. He went through slavery and imprisonment. Because God did not want Joseph to forget his dreams, He made him an interpreter of other people’s dreams.
Keep Believing
Many years later, Joseph’s early dreams materialized. He became the ruler, not only of his father’s household, but also of the Egyptians (at least by the powers Pharaoh had granted Him).
Apparently, Joseph never stopped believing in the God who had given him dreams. In his darkest moments, Joseph still believed his dreams would come true. Despite the passage of time, he never gave up on his dreams.
Never Stop Dreaming
Like Jacob’s favourite child, the path to our dreams is full of hills, valleys and potholes. On many occasions, we will feel as if God has forgotten us; that our dreams are just fantasies. Even then, we must remember that He who called us and promised is faithful.
Our relatives, friends, colleagues, enemies and negative circumstances may seem to stop our dreams but they will never obliterate the purposes God has inculcated in us as long as we remain faithful to Him. Never stop dreaming.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, increase my faith that I may never lose sight of the dreams you have put in my heart. Thank You because no one can thwart Your purposes for me.
