Let my mouth be filled with Your praise and with Your glory all the day.
Psalms 71:8 (NKJV)
Once when I lived in a dry are, I remember seeing animals and people alike traveling long distances to reach the nearest well. Even in the worst drought, this spring provided much-needed refreshment. At night, wild animals drank to their fill, yet the fountain continued gushing precious water.
I will Glorify Your Name all the Day
In the seventy-first psalm, David expresses a profound desire to become a well for God, albeit a different kind of spring. From the onset of the song, David is a man in distress because of powerful enemies who seek to harm him.
However, the Psalmist is not ready to give up. His hope is in God. Although he is now old (verse 9), David remembers that God had been with him in his youth (verse 4), from birth and in his conception (verse 5).
Let My Mouth be Filled With Your Praise
These recollections gives David confidence that God will not desert him in his moment of trouble. For that reason, the son of Jesse decides to well up in praise to his faithful and caring God. He says, “Let my mouth be filled with Your praise, and with Your glory all the day.” (Verse 8).
From David’s experience, we can praise God even when our situations dictate otherwise. In addition, when we look back and see how far God has led us, our response will be pure praise. This praise is to flow all the day so that hopelessness and sadness will not drown us.
A Fountain of Praise Forever
When you difficulties assail you, how do you react? Are you fast to recount God’s goodness and slow to dwell on what is going wrong? Do people know you for oozing hope and optimism or despair? Are you a fountain of praise for God?
Whatever life throws at you today, make David’s affirmation yours:
“…I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more. My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness, and Your salvation all the day. For I do not know their limits. I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD. I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.” (Psalms 71:14-16).
Prayer
Almighty, because of Your unconditional love and abundant mercy towards me, I will be a fountain of Your praise today and always.
