Why a Childlike Attitude Stands Between You and Heaven

Daily Devotional – Thursday, December 8, 2022
Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:3 (NKJV)

Few activities excite me like watching kids playing and laughing. Their innocence and infections laughter is therapeutic. They are oblivious of all the adult stress around them. There is something special about having a childlike attitude.

A Special Bond With Children

I love the sense of equity and fairness among children. They share everything they have and ensure each of them feels accepted. If one of them is hurt, the aggressor is quick to apologize even as the rest express their sympathy with the aggrieved party.

Jesus, too, had a special bond with children. He loved holding them in His arms and praying for them. In doing so, He also wanted His disciples to learn from children and adopt their attitude.

The Greatest is the ‘Child’

In one significant instance, the disciples of Jesus had asked Him, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (Matthew 18:1). Did they expect Jesus would say they were the greatest? It is likely they expected such a person to be an influential adult.

Christ’s answer must have surprised them. He set a child in their midst and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3-4).

A Carefree Existence

In my community, when one behaves in a stupid manner, people will tell her to stop behaving like a child. In contrast, Jesus has such a positive attitude towards these little ones that He wants us to be converted and become like them for us to inherit His kingdom.

What difference would it make if we became children, spiritually speaking? We would trust in our Heavenly Father fully. There would be less worry and anxiety and more joy among Christians.

Why a Childlike Attitude

We would resolve our conflicts more amicably and work as a team in the Lord’s vineyard. The desire to Lord it over others would give way to a craving for service. Where pride prevails today, humility will reign supreme.

In what ways have you lost the childlike attitude that Jesus wants you to adopt? What can you learn from your childhood and children around you about trusting God like a child? Will you submit to God today? You have no option if you want to inherit eternal life.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, convert me to become like a little child that I may inherit Your kingdom.
