For the despondent, every day brings trouble; for the happy heart, life is a continual feast.
Proverbs 15:15 (NLT)
December is here with us again. It is the festive a season and people will party hard. They will consume tons of food and litres of beverage. Welcome to the continual feast or is it?
Why Do People Love Parties So Much?
Well, merrymaking is therapeutic. It momentarily washes away all the worries and stresses of the past. It offers a temporary escape route from the cares of this life. It is an opportunity to fill the heart with joy.
The reality, though, sinks the afternoon after the party. It becomes clear that the merrymaking was like a narcotic, providing a high moment that could not be sustained for long. The reveler returns to default settings – a life of struggle and despondency.
Celebrating Incessantly
Then there are those who will not attend parties this December. Some are bedridden. Others cannot afford to host festivities. Still another group has no friend to invite to make merry. Perhaps they do not belong to the chosen social classes.
Now, imagine meeting a person who parties 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year! Is that even possible? You ask. Where would an individual get the resources, time and company to celebrate uninterruptedly?
A Perpetual Banquet
Let us allow Solomon to identify that person. The wise man says, “For the despondent, every day brings trouble; for the happy heart, life is a continual feast.” (Proverbs 15:15). As with many other proverbs, the first part is juxtaposed with the second.
This verse is about attitude and belief. The dejected person attracts trouble daily while the cheerful one is forever making merry. In essence, we make the choice on whether to have a perpetual banquet or to live miserably.
Unending Revelry
Joy is a product of the outworking of the Holy Spirit in our hearts or minds. (Galatians 5:22-23). When joy inundates and imbues our hearts, we became wells of happiness. We do not need to attend parties to be happy because the festivity happens inside us.
Having an unending revelry does not mean we will not lack or go through hardship. It means we have chosen to defy challenges and trust in God. Knowing the Lord is with us anytime and anywhere results in uninterrupted joy. (Galatians 4:4).
Feasting Continually
Whether you will attend a party this season or you will abstain, remember you can have a continual feast by inviting the Holy Spirit to live inside your heart. Choose gratitude and joy and you will never have a dull day.
Prayer
Thank You, Holy Spirit, because when you are in my heart, my life is a continual feast.
