God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalms 46:1 (NKJV)
The huge inferno was consuming everything in its path. Distraught home and business owners battled the fire with buckets of water and sand. Nothing was working. The people needed urgent help in their trouble.
Unreliable Assistance
Just when everyone was about to give up, firefighters arrived with blaring sirens and much gusto. Within a minute of stopping, they aimed their hoses on the fire. The people stepped aside, expecting the fire to end as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, the excitement died a few seconds after it had started. The firefighters ran out of water! The fire started gaining momentum again. The irate residents would have none of it. They pelted the fire brigade with stones.
Our Refuge and Strength
Such is the nature of human rescue efforts. Sometimes when we are in an emergency, people fail us. The arm of flesh is unreliable. Indeed as Jeremiah states, if we trust in other human, we are under a curse. (Jeremiah 17:5-6).
Where shall we turn to for help then? Kind David has the perfect answer. He says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalms 46:1). God is different from the fire brigade that turned up late and without water.
Reliable Assistance
He will not arrive late. God comes neither early nor later. He is always on time. (Read Galatians 4:1). Right when we need Him, He will not only join us in our predicaments, He will also bring the right kind of help.
The Lord is also not limited because He has all the resources we need to deal with our problem. (Read Psalm 24:1). For all our physical, spiritual, emotional and other needs, God has exactly what we need to be happy.
A Very Present Help in Trouble
Even better, when we need Him, God does not descend from heaven, as we tend to think. In Isaiah 41:10, He assures us, “Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
If you are going through a rough patch today, affirm with David, “God is MY refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” There is no reason to worry when the Almighty God is your tower of refuge.
Prayer
Almighty God, thank You because You are MY refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Passing through rough times ,I claim the promise in Psalms 46:1
Amen, Solomon. I also love claiming the promises of God.
