Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13-14 (NKJV)
My first days in an extremely arid environment were hard. I was in a team of officers on a mission to monitor government projects. We left our base early in the morning and arrived at our first stop in four hours’ time.
In Danger of Dehydration
That is where my troubles started. My patching thirst led me to the bottled water we had carried. Suffice it to know that the water was already hot! I took the bottles out of the vehicle for the water to cool. In the hot environment, I was doing zero work.
When I could no longer bear the thirst, I took a sip. The tastes was disgusting but because of my situation, I drank on. The thirst, though, persisted, as if I had not taken any water. The more water I took, the thirstier I felt, even as my tummy bulged.
He Who Drinks Will Thirst
In my desperation and frustration, I remembered what Jesus said told His disciples many years ago, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14).
The waters at Jacob’s well in Sychar refreshed many of the residents of the Samaritan town. However, the women had to come back every day, in the hot sun, to fetch water. The water did not take away their thirst fully, just like the drink from my friend.
The Futility of Longing for Worldly Pleasures
Like the Samaritan woman and her village-mates, we go out daily to earn a living that does not satisfy. Our pleasures bring no lasting gratification. The more we indulge in activities to please ourselves, the more we crave. Our human thirst knows no bounds.
The reason no beverage or pleasure can quench our thirst is because we long for a higher power to fill us. Only One Being can quench our thirst. God, only, knows our deepest desires and give us an eternal spring of life.
You Will Never Thirst Again
When we give our lives fully to Jesus, He gradually replaces thirst for earthly things with a deep longing for righteousness. No longer do we thirst for sin and its pleasure. In fact, we detest everything God detests. Drink from Jesus’ well and you will never thirst again.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, fill my heart that I may never thirst for sin and earthly pleasures again.
