And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”
Judges 6:12 (NKJV)
Apart from malicious people and well-meaning friends, another lethal killer of dreams is timidity. When we fail to appreciate how powerful we are when connected to God, we risk becoming mighty cowards, however ridiculous that might sound.
Timidity Stemming from Sin
Gideon was such a character. In Judges 6, Israel had rebelled against God the umpteenth time. As usual, the Lord had allowed a heathen nation (this time Midian) to oppress the rebellious people.
For seven years, the MidianItes oppressed the Israelites so much that the latter took refuge in dens, caves and strongholds in the mountains. Meanwhile, the enemy destroyed crops and domestic animals hence impoverishing the children of Jacob.
A Warrior in Hiding
Unable to take the oppression any more, the Israelites cried to the Lord for help. He reminded them that their suffering was a result of their disobedience. In His unfathomable mercy, though, God devised a plan to rescue His people.
That is where Gideon comes in. When the Angel of the Lord found Gideon, the latter was hiding, threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. He was not brave enough to fight against the enemy.
A Might Man of Valor
It is surprising, therefore, when the Angel greets Gideon, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (Judges 6:21). God created a mighty man of war but he is hiding from the enemy he should be fighting!
Many of us are like Gideon. God has implanted in us qualities of greatness. We have talents, skills and knowledge we can use to further the kingdom of God and to prosper materially. Unfortunately, we allow fear of the known and unknown to paralyze us.
A Strong Weakling
Mighty cowards like Gideon lose many opportunities for personal development. However, if they heed the voice of God and believe they are warriors, they will go out and accomplish great things for themselves, for the community and for the kingdom of God.
What qualities of greatness has God invested in you? In which ways have you failed to use your endowments because you are not brave enough to confront your challenges and fears? What difference does it make knowing God is with you in your perceived weakness?
Are You a Mighty Coward?
If you are struggling with fear as you seek to implement your plans for this year, remember, “…God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7). Today, start living and acting like the mighty warrior you are.
Prayer
Almighty Father, teach me to believe and act like the mighty warrior You have created me to be.
