The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
Psalm 24:1 (NKJV)
When a tycoon tried to stop auctioneers from carrying away all his property, his bank manager jeered at him and shouted, “You own nothing!” The fallen mogul fainted on the spot.
You are Bankrupt
In a world where people are obsessed with amassing wealth, nothing is more devastating than to be declared insolvent. Worse still, how would you feel if someone told you that even what you think you own is not yours?
Yet, this is exactly what God says through David in Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24:1). This is a profound statement from both a material and a spiritual point of view.
You are a Pauper
It means you are a pauper, irrespective of what you claim to own. In fact, you live in a house you do not own and drive a car that belongs to the Almighty. The land you claim to possess is not yours. You are not the owner of the electronics in your house or the clothes on your body.
Your spouse does not belong to you. Your children belong to God. The position you occupy in your organization is a privilege from God. You do not even own yourself. Like Job, you should say, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there.” (Job 1:21).
Managing God’s Property
You own nothing because it belongs to God. All human beings are stewards or managers of the Lord’s property. According to the Apostle Paul, “it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2).
Realizing how great a trust God has placed in our hands should fill us with awe and a deep sense of responsibility and accountability. God expects us to be faithful and prudent managers of our bodies, relationships, material possessions, talents, time, and other resources He has given us.
You Own Nothing
The next time you are tempted to boast about everything while excluding God from yourself and your possessions, remember that you own nothing. When God decides to take what belongs to Him, you will not protest. Be a faithful steward.
Prayer
Almighty God. Because I own nothing, teach me how to be a faithful and judicious manager of Your property and resources.
