For You are my rock and my fortress; Therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me.
Psalms 31:3 (NKJV)
Did you know that God wants you to succeed more than you do? This can be a transforming concept if you reflect on it deeply and prayerfully. It has to do with His reputation and the way He works.
Prosperous Offspring
Often, when I refer to God as a Father, I think of the relationship between my children and me. I expend all efforts to make sure they succeed in life for two reasons. One, I want my offspring to have productive lives and ensure my grandchildren live well too.
The second reason is a ‘selfish’ one. I am their father. I want to be associated with their success. When they succeed, I will have played a great role in it. Because they bear my name, people will speak positively about me. In essence, I want them to succeed for my name’s sake.
For Your Name’s Sake
Similarly, God wants us to succeed because His reputation is at stake. Here is David’s take: “For You are my rock and my fortress; Therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me.” (Psalms 31:3).
David recognizes God as His refuge and hiding place. He knows He can run to God and be safe from His enemies. The psalmist then appeals to God for guidance because that is what God desires. God’s reputation is at stake in the way He deals with David.
A Manufacturer’s Pride
God is like a manufacturer who places His trademark on the product He makes. As human beings, we bear the image of God. Our success in temporal and spiritual matters is God’s pride.
Why did Jesus die on the cross? God was not willing to give up on the crowning work of His creation. He demonstrated that he would go to all lengths to ensure that human beings live the life He had intended for them in the Garden of Eden.
Why God Wants You to Succeed
God wants you to succeed for His Name’s sake. He has placed in your life all the resources you need to prosper. If you obey God and cooperate with Him, people will say of you that you are increasing, “in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” (Luke 2:52).
Prayer
Almighty Father, for the sake of Your Name and Reputation, give me success in all aspects of my life.
