The Depth of God’s Everlasting Love

Daily Devotional – Sunday, March 5, 2023
The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”

Jeremiah 31:3 (NKJV)

Whenever I think about God’s everlasting love, the father of the prodigal son comes to mind. Empathize with the old man when his younger son demands for his share of the inheritance and leaves home into the world of entertainment.

Unfailing Kindness

Now, visualize the prodigal son returning home after years of unfettered fun and sinful living. He muses, “Will father accept me back? Did it not receive my entire inheritance? Have I not brought him a lot of shame? I don’t deserve my father’s love but I will try my luck.”

Where is the father all this time? What is going on in his mind? Does he even remember his lost son? Are there moments he wishes the son would return home? Apparently, he does because he spends a lot of time looking eagerly down the road, waiting for his profligate son to return.

He Had Compassion on his Prodigal Son

Finally, the tired, rugged and remorseful son returns home. Many of those he meets do not recognize him. “But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20).

What a wonderful symbol of God’s everlasting love. The moment we acknowledge our sinfulness and desire for forgiveness and restoration, God does not dillydally. He comes running towards us because He has been waiting for our return all along.

I Have Loved You with an Everlasting Love

Our Heavenly Father does not waste time berating for our sinful ways. Instead, He rejoices over returning sinners with singing. Angels celebrate the emancipation of another one of Satan’s captives.

How far away have you wandered from God? Forgiveness and restoration await you at home. Return to God today and claim this promises: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” (Jeremiah 31:3).

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for expressing everlasting love for a vile sinner like me. Help me to trust and obey You forever.
