God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
Numbers 23:19 (NIV)
Russell Kelso Carter in 1886 wrote the hymn ‘Standing on the Promises of God’ in 1886 while teaching at the Pennsylvania Military Academy. This amazing song reminds us to tap into the inexhaustible reservoir of God’s promises.
Trusting the Commander’s Word
Carter alludes to the discipline of the military to encourage Christians to trust God’s promises. The believer is compared to a soldier who is standing while waiting for instructions from his commander. The word of the superior is trustworthy and the soldier believes that fully.
Sample stanza 2:
Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
when the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
by the living Word of God I shall prevail,
standing on the promises of God.
Unmoved in Trusting God
This is a call to believe in the promises of God even when the circumstances around you appear threatening and the devil begins to fill your mind with doubt. In such moments, stand on this promise: “…and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” (Psalm 50:15)
Stanza 3 states:
Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
bound to him eternally by love’s strong cord,
overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
standing on the promises of God.
An Assurance for Every Situation
As Christ’s soldier, you are bound by your commitment to Him. As you go out to eke a living, Satan will try to assail you with temptation. Then you must remember victory is guaranteed in God because, “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14).
Whether you are unwell, worried or broke, God has an assurance for your situation. Whatever you need, you can place it at the feet of God, claim His promises, and He will play His role. Get acquainted with as many of God’s promises as possible and claim them as need arises.
Standing on the Promises of God
Take a moment to meditate on the lyrics of Carter’s song, then sing it aloud. Learn to stand on the promises of God as His soldier. Remember, “God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19).
Prayer
Standing, standing,
standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
