The Secret to True Prosperity

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, March 28, 2023
The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
Genesis 39:2 (NIV)

We all want to prosper in various aspects of life. Consequently, we put in much effort, sometimes sleeping late and waking up early. Some of us even take shortcuts, resorting to illegal and unethical means to reach the top. From a Biblical point of view, what is the secret to true prosperity?

How to Find Genuine Success

To find the answer, we turn to the most unlikely Bible character: Joseph, the son of Jacob. What can a poor boy, sold into slavery by his brothers, teach us about success? You ask. Indeed, nothing about Joseph, at the moment he was sold into slavery, gave the slightest hint of success.

Potiphar, a high-ranking Egyptian official, bought the young Hebrew slave. From a human point of view, Joseph would, for the rest of his life, serve his master with little chance of freedom. Success and Joseph were two unassociated terms. Well, not until we consider the most important factor of prosperity.

So Joseph Prospered

Joseph was not alone, and that was the secret of his life. Moses narrates, “The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.” (Genesis 39:2). Notice that Joseph prospered, despite his limiting circumstances, because God was with him.

Now, because God’s Presence and favour were with Joseph, something significant happened. “When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.” (Verses 3-4).

The Secret to Prosperity

There you have it. The secret to true prosperity is to have God on your side. It is the favour of God that brings success. When make God a priority in our lives and obey Him unquestioningly, He makes us prosper as He did to Joseph. Whether we are employed or in business, excellence is a product of fidelity to God. When we prosper, other people notice.

Take a moment to review your life? Are there areas in which you feel unsuccessful? Are you walking faithfully with God, trusting and obeying Him, despite the hardships and temptations you face? Make necessary amends and be patient like Joseph as God works on your case. That is the secret to true prosperity.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me to live by the secret to true prosperity, which means aligning myself to your will.
