Come and see for yourself.
John 1:46 (NLT)
Many of us are Christians by birth. We were born and raised in families of faith. Our parents introduced us to God in the same way Lois and Eunice trained Timothy in the ways of God (2 Timothy 1:5). While such a heritage is commendable, a time must come when each believer must come and see Jesus for himself or herself.
We Have Found Him
That was the experience of Nathaniel, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Early in His ministry, Jesus began to assemble the team that would carry the gospel to the world. Philip was among the earliest disciples to receive the important call from the new Rabbi.
To his credit, Philip did not keep the good news to himself. He looked for his friend Nathaniel and told him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” (John 1:45, NKJV).
It is Your Turn
What a good evangelist Philip was! Nathaniel, though, was not bulging. He asked Philip, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (Verse 46). To a native of Bethsaida, Nazareth did not have the history, nobility, and reputation of producing the Messiah.
Philip intervened. His brief interaction with Jesus had convinced Him that the Rabbi from Nazareth was the Saviour of the world. There was only one strategy for convincing Nathaniel. Philip told his friend, “Come and see for yourself.” (Verse 46).
Know Jesus for Yourself
Only a close personal interaction with Jesus would entrench faith in Nathaniel. He must see Jesus for himself instead of relying on Philip’s experience. That is exactly what happened. After an exchange of words with Jesus, Nathaniel confessed, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (Verse 49 NKJV).
Like Nathaniel, every believer must grow in faith, from merely hearing about Jesus to having a saving relationship with the Lord. Every day, we must come and see Jesus for ourselves. The Christ of our fathers and mothers must become our Saviour by personal experience.
Come and See for Yourself
Your pastor and fellow believers will lead you to Jesus through Bible teachings and personal testimonies but what matters most is that you come and see for yourself who Jesus is. As you commune with Him through a life of prayer, Bible study and practical living, you will gradually confess Him as your Lord and Saviour.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, every day, I will come to see You for myself through a life of active devotion.

Amen! Oftenly many have had Nathaniel sound negatively as in Rejecting the gospel invitation from his friend, but I’ve just understood besides hearing about Jesus Nathaniel wanted to experience Jesus by himself. He wanted something beyond hearing, something that can give him a basis for belief.Like Nathaniel we should thirst for the 1st hand relationship with Jesus. We should seek him by ourselves and grow daily in the experience of salvation, what friends, pastors etc tells us may not be enough motivator to come close to Christ, but a daily life of searching and finding about Christ can draw us close to Him.
Amen, Doc.
