By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.
Hebrews 11:30 (NKJV)
Ancient walls had high and thick protective walls around them. An army intending to infiltrate a town had to bring down the walls. The city under attack would mount a fierce counterattack in response.
Pulling Down Barriers
Now picture a group of freed slaves, with no serious military training, setting their eyes on Jericho, a city with a formidable wall and fortifications. They have no knowledge, skills, experience or sophisticated equipment to mount an attack.
There is one huge advantage, though, that they have. God sends the “Commander of the army of the LORD” (Joshua 5:14) to lead the onslaught on Jericho. The Israelites now eagerly wait for God to equip and train them for the battle ahead.
The Wall Will Fall Down Flat
Now, here is the Lord’s strategy:
“You shall march …around the city once. This you shall do six days. And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. …” (Joshua 6:3-5).
The Walls Fell Down
What! Are you serious, God? Is matching around a heavily fortified city a military strategy? Since when did priests lead an army to war? Which modern army uses trumpets and rams’ horns to fight such a formidable foe?
Actually, that strategy brought the walls of Jericho down! As Paul later observed, “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.” (Hebrews 11:30). Faith trumped military strategy and might.
How to Bring Walls Down
In the realm of faith, our role is to surround the problems and challenges we face using continuous prayer. Moreover, trusting in God’s power and goodness, we must continue working using the means available to us even as we allow God to do His part.
There are times when God’s methods will appear impractical but the alternative will not work. To bring down you walls of health, financial, marital, familial, professional, academic, and other challenges, pray without ceasing and obey God’s voice without question.
Prayer
Dear God, today I bring to You the formidable walls that impede my materials and spiritual progress. I will continue praying and following Your instructions as I watch my walls fall down.
