The mouth of the righteous is a well of life…
Proverbs 10:11 (NKJV)
While working in an arid area, I witnessed what, to many local people, was a miracle. A water drilling company had taken just a few hours to dig a well and water was gushing out profusely. The fact that the water was not salty made the occasion even more memorable.
A Source of Life
Soon, the well became a beehive of activities. Herders from near and far would bring their animals to drink their fill. Every day, there would be long queues of people and herds waiting for their turn to enjoy the fresh, cool water.
I remembered this well when I came across Proverbs 10:11, which states, “The mouth of the righteous is a well of life…” What a beautiful comparison! Imagine your mouth become the source of life to other people!
A Fountain of Water
This proverb envisions a situation where people go to the man or woman of God to find education, instructions, wisdom and nourishment. In a world where love and kindness are becoming rare, how refreshing it is to find people who ooze the freshness and confidence that only God gives!
How does the righteous person become a well of life? By accepting Jesus’ invitation, “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:14).
Spring of Life
The righteous man has no living water of his own. He must drink daily from the Fountain of Life that is Jesus Christ. Only through the outworking of the Holy Spirit does one develop the character and attitude that makes him a well of life.
If we are not ministering grace, healing, kindness and love through our speech and character, then God can proclaim about us, “…My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13).
Are You a Well of Life?
Are you a well of life to those around you? Can they testify that you are a blessing to them, including through your speech? Do you drink daily from the Fountain of Life that you may minister life to others?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, make me a well of life.
