Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3 (NKJV)
A tourist came to a border crossing late at night. He had money, papers, and confidence, but the guard shook his head. The country itself issued new documents necessary for entry. Everything the traveller had on him showed who he was, but none of it could give him entry beyond the gate ahead, which required a valid local document that would grant him passage and a new beginning.
A Change That Comes From Above
Nicodemus was a well-known religious leader who thought he knew enough about God. Jesus said these words to him. Christ’s words, therefore, must have startled him. No matter how moral or religious a person is, they can’t live a spiritual life that will let them see God’s kingdom.
The new birth originates from God, rather than from human choice or enhancement. When someone believes in Christ, it is because the Holy Spirit has awakened their heart, opened their eyes, and given them new life. God oversees the entire process from beginning to end.
The Kind of Change We Can’t Produce
As a result, where indifference used to be, new desires grow, and trust in Christ takes the place of faith in one’s own goodness. Religious credentials or self-improvement won’t get you into the kingdom of God, as entry is solely based on God’s grace and the acceptance of His gift of salvation through faith in Christ. It starts when God gives new life that turns the heart back to Him.
No one can make this new birth happen, but everyone is welcome to accept what God gives. Trust in Christ’s work to save you and ask God to give you the new life that only He can start. That is the permit you need to enter the kingdom of God.
Prayer
Dear God, create me anew that I may belong to Your kingdom.
