Mistakes that Still Matter

Daily Devotional – Monday, December 15, 2025
These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
1 Corinthians 10:11 (NIV)

Imagine watching someone ignore a clear “slippery floor” sign. They laugh, rush ahead, and fall badly. You do not have to repeat their mistake to know what happens when warnings are ignored. Their experience becomes your lesson. In the same way, the Bible offers us real stories of people whose choices teach us valuable truths without us having to experience their pain.

Wisdom From Broken Paths

The Bible contains the stories of all kinds of people. Some lived faithfully, while others made terrible decisions. Scripture does not hide human failures. Instead, it reveals them openly so that we can learn from both the good and the bad.

Paul reminded the believers in Corinth about the Israelites who rebelled against God through idolatry, immorality, and stubborn disobedience. Even though God warned them repeatedly, they ignored His voice, and their actions resulted in serious consequences. Paul explained that these events were recorded to serve as examples and warnings for us.

Mistakes that Still Matter

The presence of sinful characters in the Bible is not meant to entertain us or shock us. Their mistakes help us understand God’s love, mercy, and justice. We read about people who repented and found restoration and others who resisted God and faced destruction. Their choices highlight how patient God is, but also how serious He is about holiness.

Instead of judging those who failed, we should examine our own hearts. Their stories urge us to avoid the same spiritual pitfalls. God preserved these accounts so we can make wiser decisions and grow in obedience.

Prayer
Almighty God, help me learn from the examples in Scripture, both good and bad, so I may walk faithfully and honor You in all I do.
