The Gift of Humility

Daily Devotional – Friday, December 29, 2023
Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.
Numbers 12:3 (NKJV)

Aside from Jesus, Moses is the greatest and most effective leader in the Bible. Yet it was not always that way. Moses’ life was characterized by twists and turns. To begin with, the son of Jochebed, who grew up in affluence, is Pharaoh’s adoptive grandson and probable heir to the throne of Egypt.

The Roots of Moses’ Meekness

Moses’s education prepared him to become a leader of the then-superpower. Such a position comes with power and influence. Had he grown up to become the Pharaoh, Moses would have led his adoptive nation into war. Thankfully, his biological mother (now his maid) brought up Moses in the fear of the Lord.

That said, nothing would have prepared Moses for the demotion from the throne of Egypt to the grazing fields of Midian as a lowly shepherd. So humbled was Moses by this fall from grace that he stammered when called to lead Israel from Egypt. To God, though, it was time for Moses to make use of the leadership training he had received from Egypt about eighty years before.

Moses was Very Humble

From the top to the bottom, Moses was now at the pinnacle. However, he faced the toughest tests of his life, first in persuading Pharaoh to release the Israelites slaves and second in leading the most obstinate and rebellious people ever. Despite his failures, though, Moses succeeded in this mission too.

How would you have behaved if you had the privilege of becoming such a leader and speaking to God face-to-face? Scripture records, “Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3). The humility of this great leader was a product of interacting with God and knowing he (Moses) was nothing without God.

The Gift of Humility

Do you struggle with pride? Do you wish to be as humble as Moses? Welcome Jesus into your life, and let Him teach you how to be humble. He says, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29). Accept Christ’s gift of humility.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to be as humble as Moses and You.
