If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched.
Mark 9:43 (NKJV)
In today’s key text, Jesus does not sugarcoat things. He goes straight to the point. If something in your life is leading you into sin, get rid of it, no matter how valuable it may seem. He is not talking about physically harming ourselves, but rather making a serious choice to let go of anything that draws us away from God.
If Your Hand Causes You to Sin
Your offending ‘hand’ could be a habit you have justified for too long, a toxic relationship you are afraid to end, or a comfort zone that is keeping you from growing. Jesus is saying, “It’s not worth it.” No temporary pleasure, convenience, or success is worth risking your eternity.
Jesus is inviting us to take stock of what’s in our hands, hearts, and lives, and be willing to release what is holding us back. It might feel painful or inconvenient at first, but that temporary discomfort is nothing compared to the joy and freedom that come with choosing life with Him.
What is Holding You Back?
What is holding you back? Jesus loves you too much to let you stay stuck in what is slowly destroying you. His warning is not meant to scare you. Rather, Christ wants to wake you up to how valuable your soul really is.
Prayer
Almighty God, show me what I need to let go of so I can walk more closely with You. Even when it is hard, give me the strength to choose what leads to life.
